Great analysis. Yours is the first I've seen on youtube that didn't miss these big points. The best thing about Midsommar is that you know the cultists are definitely the bad guys, but they sure don't feel like it. Its disorienting and troubling, just like a difficult psychedelic trip. As a brown person I was immediately uncomfortable with how white the cult was, demographically and also aesthetically. I think a lot of people put themselves in the situation of being in Danny's shoes and integrating into the cult, but I think that for people of color that is more difficult. I've noticed that in very white spaces I find myself looking for little signs, either of hostility or welcoming, and the cult never struck me as welcoming during my viewing time (because of the literal murder of outsiders, of course, this being a horror movie, etc.) but also, for example, when they talk about bringing outsiders in to avoid inbreeding my immediate thought was that there seems to be no mixed-race people. During the movie I thought that Danny in particular blended in with the cult very well too, light eyes and blond hair, figured that was also a reason she was chosen. Also casting out the black one I mean.

This movie is possibly my favourite movie of all time. Horror has turned into a shitshow and people have become convinced that jump scares denote how scary a horror movie is. That is complete bullshit it denotes how fucking lazy it is. Movies like the Conjuring and Annabelle and all those shitty others like the Gallows, Happy Death Day, etc. arent real horror they are jump scare movies. Midsommar, Hereditary, The Lighthouse and The Witch are genuine horrors that fill you with unease and fear. Dont rely on jump scares at all. They are directorial masterpieces and I hope thousands of future directors use them as inspiration as I will. They are a breath of fresh air and movies I can actually get invested in as I know its not going to have a bullshit ending where everything is right and okay and the good guys banish the spirit. I want unpredictability because modern horror is boring and its dying. Directors like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are the saviours of the genre. I could go into depth of how you missed the point on almost everything. The themes of family and community, the detrimental mindset of the anthropologist at times and the other themes shown throughout the movie but you probably get those comments on here all the time. This is a movie that sure isnt for everyone but is new, its different and its trying not to be those fucking terrible mainstream horrors. And I love that for it and I aspire to write and direct something even half as good as Midsommar.

The movie is so slow and there's not a single horrifying moment in the film. No suspense at all. An absolute drag filled with some of the weirdest scenes you'll ever see. Weird to a level where I couldn't stop laughing while I was watching it.

After watching Midsommar I feel somewhat conflicted, on the one hand it's a beautiful work of art, very cinematic and it delivers on quite a few levels. However I can't deny that it's a horrific experience and not necessarily in a good way, the ending chapter of the movie is hard to watch and overall the narrative is awful. The style of horror in Midsommar reminds me of watching some other atrocities such as Hostel (2005) where the movie is centred on gore/torture type of horror which I've never understood how people can enjoy. I think that using horror in such a way is just an excuse for a poor narrative and ultimately is where the movie fails.
I do want to mention however some of the areas where Midsommar triumphs. The overall casting/acting is excellent, in particular that of Florence Pugh (Dani. As the main protagonist her character is given a lot of depth and is portrayed very well. There's also interesting and complex relationships between the characters throughout the movie, however this is ultimately ruined by all of the characters being killed off or drugged to the point that they can't even speak.
This is where again I am conflicted, I want to give an honest rating to this movie where the reviews are so polarised as I can see many good and bad things about it. I have to be honest and say that overall as a movie it fails, the narrative is very poor, would I watch this again absolutely not. The final chapter of the movie was so bad it leaves a bad taste in your mouth with some scenes so horrific you'll feel like you wished you hadn't seen them. There's no underlying deep message or allegory to take away from this it's just horror for horror's sake and I know some people like that sort of thing but it's just not for me. However I do feel like the cinematography, acting deserves some merit which alone might be worth a watch, other than that it's utter garbage.

Ive never seen the ending as a twisted “happily ever after”. To me, its just a girl that has been manipulated in her vulnerable state by the insanity of a cult that offers conditional love in exchange for her silence and compliance. To call the ending an allegory for finding inner peace through positive support groups just feels wrong in this case, because the support group in question is more than a little malicious. Still, the film is phenomenal no matter how you decide to interpret it.

Hahaha still a great film. People just don't get it. Horror that explains itself isn't scary.
